We are happy that you've arrived at this page!

The Transition concept has reached countries all over the world, and finally the time has come for Norway to embrace this positive and practical model for sustainable neighbourhoods.

We are still only in the preliminary stages for Transition in this country, and all the work we do is on voluntary basis. This website is therefore now mostly in English, but will be translated into Norwegian piece by piece. If you would like to be involved, in an existing initiative or by starting an initiative in your community, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. We need all the help we can get, and would love to get to know more positive people who can be a part of this network for change.

Currently, there are two established Transition initiatives in Norway: Bærekraftige liv på Landås (a neighborhood in the city of Bergen) and Omstilling Sagene (a borough in the city of Oslo). If you would like to hear more about these initiatives, please contact them directly - Liv på Landås, This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

The purpose of this website is to:

  • provide an introduction to the concepts, principles and practices of Transition
  • show you how to go about setting up and developing a Transition Initiative in your locale
  • help you deal with some of the objections you may come up against
  • identify training that you may need as your initiative progresses
  • enable you to connect to other Transition Initiatives in Norway

What is a Transition Initiative?

Brown Leaf
A Transition Initiative (which could be a town, village, university or island, etc) is a community-led response to the pressures of climate change, fossil fuel depletion and increasingly, economic contraction. There are thousands of initiatives around the world starting their journey to answer this crucial question:

For all those aspects of life that this community needs in order to sustain itself and thrive, how do we significantly rebuild resilience (to mitigate the effects of Peak Oil and economic contraction) and drastically reduce carbon emissions (to mitigate the effects of Climate Change)?
